Privacy Policy

A. Content Policies

  1. Content in Instant Articles, excluding ads, must appear the same as the content in the web version of the article, except as permitted below, where the Instant Article creative tools enable additional content, or where it is not possible from a technical standpoint.
  2. Content in Instant Articles must not contain or link to content that is illegal, misleading or deceptive, or that promotes regulated goods, pornography, adult products or services, sexual tips or fetishes, casual dating, violence, hacking or cracking, weapon sales, online real money games of chance or skill, work-at-home schemes, spy cameras, fake news or anything that falls within any other categories that are prohibited by the Facebook Community Standards, with the exception of apps or sites that display news editorials featuring the above content or if you have our prior written permission.
  3. Ads content in Instant Articles must comply with our Advertising Policies.
  4. Direct sold ads must be directed towards general audience users thirteen years old and above.

B. Article Experience

  1. Properly format your Instant Articles by following our technical documentation and design guidelines.
  2. Don't include confusing or misleading experiences in Instant Articles.
  3. Don't include any interactive social media plugins not supported by the product, such as Facebook’s Like, Share & Send Buttons. Use native functionality instead.
  4. If you include outbound links in your Instant Article:
    1. They must connect to specific, editorially related stories that provide direct background, history, context or analysis of the article's subject matter. You may include a link to your publication's social media presence.
    2. Links to stories, such as editorially related stories, trending stories and links to other parts of your site, must not appear as the final element in an Instant Article.
  5. Images or videos in your Instant Article must be high-resolution, and appropriate for the screen sizes and display styles that Instant Articles supports.
  6. Don’t enable the full-screen tap-to-expand function on images smaller than 1024X1024 (with 2048X2048 being our preferred image size), and videos smaller than 640X480.
  7. Don’t include any embedded web-based interactive features or ads that open a system dialog, such as asking for a user's location or to access the microphone.
  8. If your article consists of a lone media item, such as a photo, single slideshow, or video, that content must be placed in the body of the Instant Article.
  9. Don't include Related Articles on the first screen (i.e., “above the fold”).
  10. Provide a clear and prominent link to your privacy policy wherever you collect personal information.
  11. Don't use the App Install call-to-action unit to promote any app other than the app associated with your publication. For example, don't use the App Install call-to-action unit to promote other apps you own or third party apps.

C. Ads Experience

  1. Properly format your ads by following our technical documentation.
  2. Ads, including text links, must be clearly marked as sponsored by using our built-in ad-class function.
  3. The height of your ads must not exceed 1.5x the width (i.e., your ads aspect ratio must not be taller than 2:3).
  4. Ads must fill the defined size, fit article margins correctly and appear centered in the article.
  5. Don’t include ads on the first screen (i.e. “above the fold”). Embedded video content may include ads, including on the first screen, but only if the video is click-to-play and the ad is not a part of the cover image. In addition, if the video is the only content in the article (ex: a lone media article), it must not include ads.
  6. Don’t place ads in locations that can cause confusion with editorial or interface elements. For example, don’t place ads between a subheading and the following text.
  7. Each ad, including any House ad (ex: any image, video, interactive module or other form of solicitation that promotes your own content, products, apps, or services), must be separated by a minimum of 250 words. If your article consists primarily of images or media, ads must not exceed 20% of the content. In addition, you can include an extra ad at the bottom of your article provided no other ads appear on the same screen.
  8. Direct sold ads must not include videos that auto-play with sound.
  9. Ads must be fixed and not block content (i.e., the boundaries of the ad cannot expand, collapse or cover editorial content).
  10. Don’t embed ads in native Instant Article media, such as photos or videos.
  11. As a best practice, don’t include repetitive ads within an Instant Article.
  12. As a best practice, ensure your ad resolution is optimized to be 3x the size of your ad (ex: if your ad size is 300 X 250, the recommended resolution is 900x750).

D. Ad Sales and Serving

  1. You may sell Instant Article ad inventory, but don’t represent to sell News Feed ad inventory.
  2. Don’t serve ads sold by a third party (i.e., only sell ads on a direct basis). For example, Instant Articles must not include ads sold by ad networks, agencies or other advertising sales aggregators. You may use Facebook’s Audience Network.
  3. You are responsible for ensuring that you, or any third party acting on your behalf, comply with applicable laws and guidelines and provide appropriate notice and obtain consent for the collection and use of user information from your Instant Articles.
  4. Direct ads must either be directly hosted in your ad server or directly call the advertiser, returning a creative file in response to all requests (i.e., no programmatic transactions).

E. Things You Should Know

  1. We may enforce against your use of Instant Articles if we conclude any of your articles violate our policies.
  2. We may reduce your article's distribution in News Feed or prohibit you from using Instant Articles if the content on the web version or your article contains ads that provide an unexpected, disruptive, or misleading experience. This includes apps and sites that contain a disproportionate volume of ads relative to content, or ads that drive a negative user experience such as ads that are highly sexual, visually shocking, or promote scams.
  3. We reserve the right to change these policies at any time without prior notice.
